I was born on October 30, 1969 in Longmont, Colorado. I spent
most of my life as a child and young adult in Colorado, graduating
from Widefield High School in 1988. While growing up, I had
a burning interest in mechanical processes. As an early teen,
I taught myself to rebuild small engines, and ran a knife-making
business with my brother in which we built a blacksmithing
operation (from items rescued from a scrap yard) in which
I forged exotic weaponry and heat-treated steel. I also exalted
in pastimes such as rock climbing and mountaineering in the
hills of Colorado.
I attended the Colorado School of Mines in Golden Colorado
and earned a B.S. in Engineering with a Mechanical option
in 1992. It was there that I discovered that the petroleum
industry would be an exciting place to work, as one of my
professors pointed out that the two most high-tech industries
were space exploration and oil exploration. Both because the
environments present profound technological challenges and
the funding required to create that technology is readily
available. In going to work for Schlumberger as a Wireline
Field Engineer, I have enjoyed working with the state of the
art in wireline logging tools. I have also been able to satisfy
my personal need for adventure, visiting countries I never
expected to see, and having experiences I never thought I
would have. For example, I rode through the Panama Canal aboard
the JOIDES Resolution on my way out to gather data for scientific
research, something I never expected to do in high school!
