Professor Chris Chapman was born on 5 May 1945 in Sutton, Surrey, England. He grew up in the suburbs of London and went to school at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith where he was introduced to mathematics and applied mathematics by excellent teachers. He then took an BA degree in Theoretical Physics (1966) and a PhD in Geophysics (1969) at Cambridge University. From 1969 to 1974 he was a professor in the physics department at the University of Alberta, teaching physics and geophysics. He then spent 10 years at the University of Toronto, before moving back to England where he was Professor of Geophysics at Cambridge University from 1984 to 1989. In 1991 he started work at Schlumberger Cambridge Research as a Scientific Advisor, a position he still holds. He used to be a keen photographer, although he now hardly has time to keep up with the new technology, and likes sailing.
