I was born in Warwickshire, UK and spent my first 5 years
in the Midlands, near Coventry. Then my parents decided
to move to Wales as they liked the beautiful coastline
and wild open spaces.
I went so primary school in Pennard on the Gower and
then to Comprehensive School at Olchfa Comprehensive School
in Killay, Swansea.
Highlights of schooling and education:
- Took 2 O levels a year early and was the only student
in the school to achieve an A grade in both exams
- Have 7 GCSEs, 1 AO Level, 4 A Levels and 1 S Level
- Took a year out between school and University. Did
all kinds of things like work as a walking leader, conservation
work, aid trip to Romania, worked with the Princes Trust,
completed a 2000 mile bike ride and organised a trip
to Corsica
- Took part in Raleigh International expedition to Namibia
in 1992, for which I fund-raised about £4,000
- During University was member of the Officers Training
Corps
- Completed a degree in Environmental Science at the
University of Wales Aberystwyth with a 2.1 Honours Degree
in 1995
- Took a year out between my 2nd and 3rd year of my
degree during. I worked in the USA teaching ecology,
studied deer in the remote Highlands of Scotland, and
worked in an agricultural research centre studying insects
and farming
- Did a Masters Degree in Ecology at the University
of Aberdeen in 1996. My final dissertation concerned
the predation of grouse by Hen Harriers on heather moorlands
- Other qualifications and experience: Environmental
Auditor, qualified walking and expedition leader and
have worked in Africa, South America, Scotland and Europe,
conversational Spanish, conversational German
After completing my studies I got work first in environmental
research and then in environmental consultancy in Aberdeen,
Scotland. There I worked as an environmental advisor and
auditor for the oil industry both in the offshore North
Sea environment and in Kazahkstan, Argentina and Bolivia.
I also worked with local fish processors and conducted
a consultation process on behalf of the Scottish Executive
and the water industry in Scotland. In 2000 I left my
job in order to move to Germany with my husband who works
for Schlumberger. Since then I have started and sold a
business and am now concentrating on learning German.
I also am aiming to become qualified as a fitness coach.
I first became interested in organised sports training
and competitions in 1999 after meeting a professional
triathlete called Sally Edwards. Sally is a leading sports
authority and runs a business training people how to train
using heart rate monitors. I came into contact with this
company through the internet and invited Sally to present
a seminar in Scotland. Having never really been very successful
on the sports field at school I realised that using a
heart rate monitor I could achieve the sporting goals
I wanted. Since then I have trained for and competed in
3 triathlons, a 120km bike race, 2 running races, and
am currently training for my first marathon in April 2002.
Other sporting interests include mountaineering and trekking,
Winter climbing in Scotland, cross country skiing, horseriding
and mountain biking. In Scotland I have almost completed
a challenge to climb all 284 mountains over 3000 feet,
called 'Munros'.
