seed news for schlumberger
people worldwide

SEED has grown thanks to the hearts, minds and hands of over 1500 volunteers. It is now a solidly rooted platform reaching over 150 communities where we work and live. Each one of you has brought his/her special gift to the creation of this network that spans 36 countries. Passion is what brings us all together to make a difference in the lives of more than 170,000 children we touch.

As individuals, you are inspiring and guiding young people to imagine a better future for themselves. You are their role models.

Schlumberger technologies and infrastructure open doors to new worlds of possibility for youth in the field of science. Our financial reach creates opportunities for youth to take action in their communities. Our creativity brings innovative ways of learning about science, the environment and our interdependence.

SEED volunteer Latha Nattu helps students Sanjeev and Manoj construct their model.

I’d like to share with you a story as an example: Last year, four students at a SEED network school in Chennai, India joined efforts to safely recycle their school’s gray water—mostly waste from wash basins. With the support of their parents, teachers and other members of their school community, as well as SEED volunteers and staff, they used a scientific approach to design a biologically sustainable water treatment unit. Their school carpenter helped them construct a prototype, and the SEED Action Fund will award them a grant to help realize their plan. Their amazing story is published on the SEED web site. Unique as it is, though, the Chennai story is only one of many inspiring stories that are emerging in our SEED network. Empowered students are expanding the SEED impact in their communities while becoming role models themselves.

I would personally like to extend my gratitude to our passionate volunteers and supporters who are making this kind of change possible one student at a time. I would also like to welcome our 404 new volunteers who joined us in 2005. I invite you all to visit the SEED Volunteer Center web site where you will find many ways you can contribute. You can also contact our Volunteer Program manager, Indira Pallinti.

"As a science and technology-based company that is dependent upon well educated and talented people for its success we are acutely aware of the value of the learning from which we ourselves have benefited and through which we have had the opportunity to develop our potential. We would like to offer the same opportunity to children in communities where we live and work. SEED enables our people to share their passion for learning and science to create opportunities for youth."
