seed news for schlumberger
people worldwide
Philippe Lacour-Gayet

Dear SEEDLINK Readers,

When I consider the opportunities for progress opened by Science and Technology, I believe that there has never been a more fascinating era than today, especially concerning the science of climate. It is an arena that challenges me as a global citizen, both professionally and personally. I am excited to introduce Climate Change and Energy as the latest theme for the SEED website and activities around the world.

Schlumberger is committed to pursuing this area of focus as a company, and our people are well suited to guide others on the same journey. I have great confidence that working through SEED with students and teachers in local communities will have a great positive impact on the future.

So, what can each of us do?

- We can learn and teach the facts, namely that fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas will continue to provide up to 90% of the world’s total energy in the coming decades.

- We can improve our understanding, through firsthand scientific observation, of energy, how we use it and how it impacts our world.

- We can invent and use low-cost, climate-friendly alternative energy sources to replace oil and gas, and curb and dispose of CO2 and other pollutants with the aim of reducing them entirely.

In March, participants in SEED workshops in Kuala Lumpur and Mexico City evaluated sources of energy and created solutions to energy- and climate-related challenges. Highlights of the Malaysia workshop are published in SEED Voices.

I have been contributing to SEED as a volunteer since it began in 1998. As Chief Editor of the Climate Change and Energy micro-site, I urge everyone in the Schlumberger community to go online and explore our exceptional coverage of the issues that frame the Global Warming debate through articles, photos, and state-of-the-art graphs and simulations that address the topic in comprehensive detail. I consider it to be an excellent primer on this topic.

“We have decided to focus our attention on the challenges where our organizational strengths, technological expertise, and cultural values will have the greatest impact. We, therefore, will focus on three distinct themes: climate change; health, safety, and environment; and education…We have chosen the term “Global Citizenship” to describe our approach because it best reflects the great cultural diversity of our people as well as their will, individually and collectively, to contribute to the progress and well-being of those whose lives are touched by our activities around the globe.”
